The historical Old Town of San Diego, California

San Diego Old Town

Historic Old Town is located within the heart of San Diego, California. Old Town State Historic Park is where the city of San Diego began. There are over 150 restaurants, shops, and historical sites. Historic Old Town, the Birthplace of California, is definitely the place to visit, for both locals and tourists. Upon entering this beautiful historical community, you will be amazed at the History, Art, and Culture. The museums, the shops, and the magnificent historic Victorian homes, with their cobblestone roads will give you a nostalgic feeling of days from long ago. Especially when you venture into the Old Town State Historic Park with the 1800’s adobe casa gardens, breathtaking lush flowers, and huge old trees under San Diego’s blue, sunny skies.

It was 1769, when Father Junipero Serra established the first Mission and Presidio, built on a hillside overlooking Old Town San Diego. This is the site of the first Spanish Settlement in California. Below the Presidio, at the bottom of the hill, the early foundation of the town began. In the 1820’s, a small Mexican community built their adobes, and a Heritage was born. The small town was cultivated with great progress and rich character. By 1835, this flourishing community El Pueblo de San Diego was indeed a place of deep roots, established firmly by the perseverance of these early settlers.

In 1846, a US Navy Lieutenant, along with a US Marine Lieutenant, raised the American flag in the Old Town San Diego Plaza.

This was just one small stepping-stone into the early years of Old Town San Diego. The early settlers of this Historical Town stirred a breeze that carried along through the winds of time…people who lived, worked, raised families, farmed, traded, built, and maintained their customs with determination. In 1968, the State of California, Parks and Recreation established Old Town State Historic Park Old Town. Come to Old Town and visit yesterday. Relive traditions, and ways of life from the past, tour the world famous Whaley house, the art galleries, the museums, restaurants, and so much more! Enjoy the many accommodations, community events, historical sites, and do not forget the shopping. Old Town San Diego holds the promise of a memorable visit to the Birthplace of San Diego, California.
