The San Diego Ghost Hunters || sdGH || Investigations || Silver King Ghost Town and Mine Investigation: Gila County Jail

The Gila County Jail in Globe, Arizona is the ideal location for a San Diego Ghost Hunters investigation: A historic location that extracted great energy from its inhabitants and presents a long standing mystery. This multi-level jail was built in 1910 to replace the incarceration duties of the next door courthouse. At the start of the century when living conditions for the general public could be rough by today's standard, nobody would argue this facility was as raw and unaccommodating as could be imagined.

In 1911, the mysterious murder of a suspected child killer within his cell while sleeping shocked the town. Was the killer the children's father, the sheriff, a paid assassin? Nobody to this day knows or has publicly stated they do.

Among other trips, the sdGH team has made two treks to Globe exactly one year apart, to the day and moment of the killing, in attempt to find clues from beyond as to who might be responsible for the killing that made national news.

Much of the best EVP captured by the sdGH team is not gained from structured EVP sessions, but when recording devices are allowed to run continuously as the team interacts with their environment. Unfortunately, that means EVP is at times interrupted by member voices or movement, but an overall higher yield is gained helping to determine what activity might be present. The use of headphones is highly recommended.

Gila County Jail "Hi, fellas...": Globe, Arizona
[ evp | real time | unknown ]

Everybody enjoys a warm welcome when entering unknown territory and that's exactly what sdGH founders Maritza and Sharon received when investigating the Gila County jail building in the small historic western town of Globe, Arizona.

As the two were walking though an upper level trustee dorm while evaluating potential spirit activity, a welcoming "Hi, fellas..." is heard as recorded by Maritza's digital voice recorder. Three members of a fellow investigation team is heard chatting at the end of the clip as they make their way from a lower level to the sdGH team. The combined group of five were the only mortals in the building and its only male is heard, eliminating him as the source of the breathy greeting.

Gila County Jail "Yes": Globe, Arizona
[ evp |
real time | unknown ]

As sdGH founder, Maritza, makes her way through the location to evaluate potential activity, she asks if any spirits might be present. There seemed to be. A disembodied voice is heard by her before she makes her way to other team members to share her experience.

Gila County Jail "Peter...I'm here...Peter?...": Globe, Arizona
[ evp | real time | unknown ]

This recording is one of the most puzzling the team has uncovered. While core team members, Maritza, Sharon and Dawn, are investigating one of two jail cell blocks, an anomalous voice is heard making himself known and calling out for a "Peter".

The capture is so clear, so robust that it seems almost impossible to designate it as an EVP. It must have been a living person, right?. It could be except for the following:
1 | No "Peter" was associated with the investigation and no visitors were known to enter this
     late night investigation;
2 | Based on volume and interior vs. exterior audio characteristics reviewed by the team,
     the voice originated from within the jail, near the cell being investigated;
3 | The team does not acknowledge the voice which would have been immediate if heard;
4 | Tech director, Matthew, was stationed at the ground floor where any person entering cell
     areas of the small jail would had to pass him. Matthew does not acknowledge the voice.
     The only other entry way to the jail, through an upper level catwalk, was also manned.

Gila County Jail "Whistle" and name called: Globe, Arizona
[ evp | real time | unknown ]

Almost a copy of the capture entry above, another two possible EVP was found that has the team reeling. While core team members, Maritza, Sharon and Dawn, are investigating one of two jail cell blocks, an anomalous long, tuneful whistle is presented. Then to finish off this amazing occurance, the possibility of Maritza's name being called is captured at the nine second mark. It is repeated three times.

The captures are so clear, so robust that it seems almost impossible not to think it was natural. It must have been a person passing through the jail, right?. It could be except for the following:
1 | Based on volume and interior vs. exterior audio characteristics reviewed by the team,
     the whistle originated from within the jail, near the cell being investigated;
2 | The team does not acknowledge the whistle which would have been immediate if heard;
5 | Tech director, Matthew, the only maile present, was stationed on the ground floor where any
     person entering the small jail's cell areas would have passed him. Matthew also does not
     acknowledge the whistle.

Gila County Jail "Singing": Globe, Arizona
[ evp | real time | unknown ]

This interesting recording presents possible male singing in the background of Maritza's questioning within one of the jail's cell block. Though distant and possibly originating from a person outside the building, this recording was made late night in an area not populated by town residents. Maritza also does not acknowledge the vocalization.

Repeated listening will establish the tuneful notes made by this individual.

Gila County Jail "Yes": Globe, Arizona
[ evp | real time | unknown ]

As the team investigates a cell block within the jail, founder, Maritza, calls out for any presences that may be with them. A male voice responds with a "Yes" at the five seconds mark.

Gila County Jail "No shoes on": Globe, Arizona
[ evp | real time | unknown ]

During this EVP capture, the team is again located in Kingsley Old's cell near the time he was mysteriously murdered. After team founder, Maritza, asks if Olds is in pain, a background voice can be heard mentioning that "he didn't have shoes on" and goes on with a string of words that can't be fully understood under Maritza's voice. As noted by Maritza, the recording talkes place at 4:18, and that would be in the AM where no one but the team was in the area.

Gila County Jail "I am Beckum": Globe, Arizona
[ evp | real time | unknown ]

As the team passes through one of the several cell blocks to evaluate potential activity, a male voice from beyond appears to make themself know at the three seconds mark, possibly stating, "I am Beckum".
The below three images were taken in sequence by the team's hunting camera. Secured into position within the main cell block, the IR night vision camera is triggered by the system's motion detector. Photo one shows a sharp image of the cell; the second displays an movement blur; the third photo presents an anomalous haze and a image shift indicating the camera had moved up. The camera movement was not noticed by the team during the investigation. In the opinion of the tech director, if any errant movement were to occur, it most likely would be downward based on the camera's mounting and gravity. The whole sequence is surely an oddity.

The below images were captured by a team member's point and shoot digital camera. The strange cluster was found in only two images of a series taken within this cell block. It can be possibly be explained by the result of digital sensor interpretation, but note the cluster is the same in both images with the second showing something highly reflective in this empty cell. It is strange nonetheless and their taking corresponds with other evidence captured in this area.

Curious EMF readings from multiple instrumentation were found within the jail, specifically inside the trustees' dorm. The building was originally constructed using thick, escape-resistant steel reinforced concrete walls and floors. Minimal electricity is used throughout, mostly at the ground level where museum displays are presented. Upper level electricity is used for general lighting in hallways, uses modern wiring and installed using conduits mounted on wall surfaces. Does the jail's specialized construction promote conduction of electrical fields? If so, was it a healthy environment for its occupants?

The below images were photographed in the top level dorm room. The most interesting readings were constant high levels on the large room's floor. Others included high levels found along the dorm's walls were no electrical wiring was installed. The team considers these fields to be of a natural origin, but are curious considering the jail's construction. It deserves further investigation with a qualified electrician.
