History

Hotel Del Coronado

Built over 115 years ago to be the largest hotel in the world, this impressive hotel boasts a rich and colorful history. On the beaches of San Diego, California, the Hotel Del Coronado is an impressive wooden Victorian beach resort. Construction began in March of 1887 and the hotel was finished in a mere 11 months.
The Hotel Del Coronado has been visited by Presidents, Royalty, movie stars and American legends. The hotel was featured in the movie “Some Like It hot (1959)”, starring Marilyn Monroe, Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon. It is said to be the inspiration for the movie "Somewhere in Time", starring Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour.

A famous inhabitant of the hotel was Kate Morgan. She checked herself into Room 302 as Lottie A. Anderson - one of her many aliases - on November 24, 1892. Her body was found in the early hours of November 29, but she could have died in the late of hours of November 28. She was discovered on the stairs located on the northwest side of the hotel - stairs which led down to the beach. (The stairs are no longer there.) Kate's date of death is undetermined; however, November 29, 1892, is the date given on her death certificate.

On Saturday, December 13, 1892, Kate was given a funeral at Johnson & Company in San Diego, and was placed in a hearse and taken to the Mount Hope Cemetery, where her body was put to rest.

From grand history to paranormal activity; the Hotel Del Coronado is a resort full of wonderment and intrigue.
