Horton Grand Hotel

Gaslamp District

History

Two separate hotels, at two separate locations were once restored to become one beautiful Hotel known today as the Horton Grand Hotel. The Grand Horton and the Brooklyn-Kahle Saddlery Hotel were both operating in San Diego in 1886. This area, dubbed the Stingaree district was known to be the entertainment center of the city. The Grand Horton was modeled after an Inn from Vienna, Austria. It was mainly accommodated by travelers using San Diego’s first trans-continental train. The Brooklyn (nicknamed the Kahle Saddlery) Hotel was a more relaxed atmosphere and was also home to Wyatt Earp while he lived in San Diego.
In the late 70’s both hotels faced demolition. In order to save these buildings, the city of San Diego purchased the two hotels each for $1.00. Both hotels were carefully dismantled and piece-by-pieced placed into storage. Finally in May 1986, the Horton Grand Hotel was opened. Brick by brick the Horton Grand was put together. The beautiful 100-year-old staircase that stands today was taken from the original Grand Horton and restored to be the centerpiece of this famed Hotel.
Several ghosts are said to haunt this hotel. With a notorious history of gambling, brothels, violence, and opium dens in the area it is no wonder this would be a very active place for the spirit world.
