Star Of India

History

Originally named the Euterpe after the Greek goddess of music, the Star of India was built in 1863. The work was done at Ramsey shipyard in the Isle of Man using iron instead of wood. The ship had rough start; on only her first journey, she experienced a collision. On her second journey thru the Bay of Bengal, she faced a cyclone which cut away her topmasts, making it very difficult to dock. Shortly after that, her captain died on board and was laid to rest at sea.
In 1871 with the rough times and many changes in ownership behind her, for the next 25 years she served mainly as a passenger vessel, cargo ship, and hauled immigrants to New Zealand. She made stops to Chile, Australia, and even California. In 1898, bought by Americans, the Euterpe was set to embark on sailings from California, loaded with fisherman, heading to the Bering Sea, bringing home canned salmon. In 1906 her name was changed to The Star of India. This hardy ship circumnavigated the globe 21 times!

The Star of India was brought to San Diego in 1923. Sitting in port for over fifty years, the Star of India got a makeover in 1976. She is the oldest vessel still afloat today and one of San Diego’s most beautiful attractions.

What a wonderful old ship! Well worth a look if you are in town.

In addition, they have several other vessels to tour.
