Berkeley

Sharon checking out the men's room

There were four of us in the room and we all heard a man take a deep breath

This is such a historical ship

The engine equipment is awesome

This was the cart used to move the luggage around the ship

So many things to look at

Going down to the engine room and boiler room

We picked up a man by the name of Steve

He said he died in this room, but was buried in San Francisco

The workroom was the most active room for us that night

We would ask questions, and heard knocking on the tables and walls

History

The Berkeley Ferryboat was built in 1898. Mainly the ferryboat traveled between San Francisco and Oakland. It is an elaborate and beautiful Victorian style vessel that still holds its original stained glass pieces and ornate woodwork.
On April 18th, 1906 a terrible earthquake hit San Francisco. This triggered fires and devastation throughout the city. The Berkeley was used as the main transportation of the survivors as well as the wounded to surrounding areas of safety. Around-the-clock, people were jam-packed by the hundreds into the vessel and saved from the burning city.
In 1973 the Berkeley was acquired by San Diego and moved to the Maritime Museum.
